OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SUSTAINABILITY

WHAT’S MORE ELEGANT THAN A CHOICE YOU FULLY STAND BEHIND?

The fashion industry
generates 92 million
tonnes of waste per
year. Most items are
worn for just a few
weeks, but take
decades to
decompose.

We are not the solution. But we
are trying not to be part of the
problem.

On average, a piece
of clothing is worn
just 7 to 10 times
before it is thrown
away.

They take anywhere
from 50 to more than
200 years to
decompose.

And 60 to 70 percent
of all clothing today
is made from
synthetic fibres
such as nylon,
acrylic and
polyester.

And when they finally do, they still leave

microplastics behind.

At this rate, we will run out of landfill space before we run out of materials.

WE WANT TO PROVE THAT
LUXURY AND ETHICS CAN
COEXIST BEAUTIFULLY

As a luxury lingerie brand, we recognise our responsibility to minimise our environmental impact as much as possible. We do this with painstaking attention to detail because we want to create lingerie that you love and that lasts. At every step of the process we ask ourselves: how can we do better?

We may not be perfect, but we will never mislead you. Ethics and transparency are at the core of what we do, so we offer complete visibility of our materials and practices. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re committed to finding them and pushing beyond the status quo.

EVERY MATERIAL
MATTERS

We carefully study the sustainable credentials of every single component of our products, from the fabrics to the elastics, thread and accessories. All of our materials are sourced and manufactured in Europe, which enables us to maintain comprehensive visibility of our supply chain and traceability of our materials.

We collaborate with suppliers who share our vision of ethical practices and who are pioneers of sustainable textiles, continuously developing their products using the latest eco-innovations in the industry.

Slow fashion

FOR A

fast world.

Every piece from every collection remains available until it finds its perfect match. Because your lingerie doesn’t care what season it is. We create pieces that you won’t want to throw away, no matter what the trends are telling you.

INNOVATION WITH A CONSCIENCE

We use the first fully biodegradable polyamide yarn that decomposes completely into organic matter and biogas.

We were the first brand to invest in a new elastic edging developed in Spain with fully biodegradable polyamide.

Some of our garments feature the world’s first compostable elastane, Cradle-to-Cradle certified.

WE DON’T STOP AT MATERIALS

Our promise to minimise our negative environmental impact goes beyond our products. It extends to every stage of the supply chain. There are many hidden practices that significantly impact the environment, often flying under the radar. We are committed to making better choices than industry standards, even if they are less convenient.

Eco-friendly printing

Our designs are digitally printed, using much less water than traditional dyeing methods.

Biodegradable packaging

Every single element of our packaging – including inks and adhesives – is 100% biodegradable.

Green website

Even this website is powered by renewable energy.

Partnering with Canopy allows us to contribute to groundbreaking work finding next-generation alternatives to cellulosic fabrics such as viscose and rayon, which are responsible for the logging of more than 300 million trees each year. The initiative, CanopyStyle, goes beyond simply planting trees; we are investing in creating systemic change in how materials are sourced, and pushing the fashion industry towards a greener future.

What is sustainable lingerie?

Sustainable lingerie refers to intimates made from eco-friendly materials and produced through ethical manufacturing processes that focus on reducing environmental impact, ensuring fair labour practices and promoting long-lasting quality. Materials include naturally biodegradable fibres such as organic cotton or Tencel, recycled fabrics  including nylon, and next-generation innovations such as biobased elastane. At Luciela, all our lingerie collections are what we consider environmentally-friendly underwear, ethically sourced in Europe and sustainably crafted by a lingerie atelier based in Lisbon. Our commitment to conscious, integrity-driven practices ensures that every item is not only a luxury to wear, but also a reflection of a deeper commitment to sustainability and ethical values. See how recycled nylon (polyamide) is used in our Thistle collection and biodegradable lace in our Poppy collection.

Sustainable lingerie is important because it reduces the environmental footprint  associated with the fashion industry, which is one of the most polluting in the world. Conventional intimate apparel often involves harmful chemicals, excessive water usage and unethical manufacturing practices, so choosing a more environmentally friendly option supports a healthier planet and fairer working conditions. Luciela is a young but ambitious eco-luxe lingerie brand and we aim to design lingerie in the most responsible way possible. Learn more about the materials we use here.

Responsibly produced intimates can be more expensive due to the higher costs associated with eco-friendly materials and ethical labour practices, for example where sourcing and production takes place in Europe. These garments often offer superior quality and durability, however, which can be more cost-effective in the long run as they will not need to be replaced as often. At Luciela we aim to create ethical lingerie that will stand the test of time, provided that it is properly cared for, to support slow fashion and encourage mindful consumption.
